About River Lodge
River Lodge is an independent guide to landscaping and outdoor work across New Zealand. We publish plain-English articles on what the work actually costs here, which local rules apply, and how to find trades who do good work. No jargon, no sales pitch — just the sort of advice we wish we’d had before our own projects.
Why we started
Most home-improvement advice online is written for somewhere else and ignores local conditions and the rules that apply in New Zealand. We built this site to fill that gap with local, practical information for homeowners here.
How we work
- Prices are ranges, not promises. Every site is different. We publish realistic ranges so you can budget, then tell you to get a written quote.
- We point to the source. Where rules matter, we link to your local council and other official bodies so you can check for yourself.
- We stay current. Costs and rules change. We update articles as things move, which is why you’ll see a spread of publication dates across the site.
How we recommend trades
Some of our articles point readers to local trade businesses we consider worth contacting. We only recommend firms working in the area we’re writing about. We are a guide, not a contractor — we don’t quote, book or carry out work ourselves. If you’re a homeowner, always get more than one quote and check that any work needing approval is properly consented.
A note on accuracy
We take care to be accurate, but rules and prices change and every property is different. Nothing here is a substitute for professional advice on your specific situation. If you spot something out of date, we’d genuinely like to hear about it — see our contact page. For disputes with a contractor, see Consumer NZ.
