I’m Hemi, and tree work around the Hutt Valley has kept me busy for years — Upper Hutt, Wainuiomata, all through the flat at Petone. Petone’s the one that still catches me out, though. A mate who’s lived his whole life on Jackson Street put it better than I ever could: “You’re not standing on land, Hemi, you’re standing on what the sea gave back.” He’s about right. A big chunk of flat Petone is reclaimed and made ground, and if you own a section here, that one fact quietly shapes almost every outdoor decision you’ll make — what you plant, where you dig, and what a tree’s roots are actually gripping onto.

Why the ground under flat Petone isn’t like the rest of the valley

Petone sits on the old Waiwhetū delta. Much of the flat closer to the foreshore, and a fair bit of the old industrial strip near the railway, is fill dumped over soft marine silts and gravels. Walk on it and the top feels firm enough. Underneath, though, there can be metres of soft, waterlogged material that behaves nothing like the hill clay a few kilometres up the road.

For a tree bloke, that changes how I read a root plate. A big tree on soft, saturated ground has far less to grip onto. I’ve seen well-established gums and old macrocarpa lean hard after a wet winter here — not from disease, just the ground letting go around the roots. If you’ve got mature trees near the house on made ground, get a proper root plate assessment done rather than assuming a big trunk means a solid tree.

Liquefaction: why the word keeps coming up on site

You’ll hear “liquefaction” thrown around a lot in Petone, and it’s not just scaremongering. Because the ground’s soft and wet, I steer Petone owners away from big, thirsty, shallow-rooted trees close to the house or the boundary. Willows, poplars and large gums chase water and can lift paths, block drains, and turn into a lean risk on soft fill. Better bets are smaller natives that handle damp — kōwhai in a well-drained spot, cabbage tree, and flaxes — which hold the ground without becoming a hazard down the line.

If you inherit a big tree with the property, don’t take it out on a whim either. Removing a mature tree on reclaimed land needs someone who understands the ground it’s standing on as well as the tree itself, because a rushed felling on soft footing is genuinely dangerous — for the crew and for whatever’s nearby.

Questions I get asked on site

Is all of Petone built on reclaimed land? No. The flat closer to the foreshore and the older industrial strip is largely reclaimed or filled ground, while sections nearer the hills sit on firmer natural material. Check your specific site rather than assuming, because conditions change street to street.

Can I plant big trees on a Petone section? You can, but choose carefully. On soft, wet made ground I avoid large, water-seeking species near buildings, drains and boundaries, and lean towards smaller natives that tolerate damp and won’t become a lean or root-damage risk.

Do I need a geotech report for work in Petone? Often yes for new builds, retaining or larger structures, because of liquefaction and soft-ground concerns. Your council or engineer will confirm, but budget for one early rather than being surprised partway through a project.

If a tree’s leaning, can it be saved instead of removed? Sometimes. If the lean’s come on gradually and the root plate’s still mostly intact, cabling or a crown reduction can buy it time. But on soft, saturated fill I’d rather call it early — a tree that’s already moved once on made ground is far more likely to move again in the next big southerly.
